All summer long and on till late autumn the mountain landscapes of the Salzburger Land Austria invite you to take long hikes. Whether an easy walk or a challenging tour – here will turn every nature outing into an unforgettable experience.
Hike through idyllic mountain woods
You walk through the Alpendorf, along the street in the direction of guest house "Gasthof Sternhof". At the last right-hand curve before the guest house "Gasthof Sternhof", the hiking trail forks to the "Kreistenalm" chalet.
From there, walk through the idyllic mountain woods straight to the hut. You can enjoy the wonderful panorama of the surrounding Austrian mountain world from this destination. The owner Anni Hausbacher is happy to serve you with specialities such as "Kasnockn" cheese dumplings and "Kaiserschmarren" sweet baked pancakes with fruit, also with bacon, cheese, meat, butter milk and of course with Schnapps.
The "Kreistenalm" chalet is open from the middle of June to the end of October. The ascent takes approx. 1.5 hours.
Hiking in the Großarltal valley / Salzburger Land
The "Maurachalm" chalet can be reached with the funicular from St. Johann-Alpendorf via the "Buchauhütte" chalet and the "Gernkogelalm" chalet and then going in the direction of the "Sonntagskogel" peak in approx. 1.5 hours.
The "Maurachalm" chalet is the most northerly chalet serving food in the Großarltal valley. The dairy farming hosts are happy to pamper you with home-made specialities such as milk, buttermilk, cheese, bacon, farmer’s bread and in particular different sorts of fine Schnapps, such as elder and rowanberry.
They love to sing and make music. For children there’s a play area and at the end of September you can see the bringing down of the animals from the high pastures with decorated animals.
Walk to the unique mountain lake / Salzburger Land
Drive from St. Johann on the federal road 163 to Wagrain, there you turn right towards Kleinarl. Go through Kleinarl and stay on the road, always straight ahead then you will get to the "Jägersee".
Beautiful hike from the "Jägersee" to the "Tappenkarsee", a unique Austrian mountain lake. You walk to the "Tappenkarsee" between 1 hour 20 minutes and 2 hours. Altitude of 750 metres. The path leads evenly steeply uphill from the start. Do not start so quickly! Then you cross a waterfall and small screes.
Hike in the "Hochkönig" mountain / Salzburger Land
On the federal road 311, exit Bischofshofen. Continue straight towards Mühlbach. The first street in Mühlbach right on "Arthur Haus". There you will find a parking lot.
Beautiful hike with great views, approximately altitude of 150 metres. You walk to the chalet 45-60 minutes. From the car park take the footpath towards "Mitterfeldalm". The chalet is located at 1,670 m. After an initial slight rise in the last third of the way it is pretty steep. Also a suitable tour for children.
Use the trail from the parking lot toward "Hochkeil". The trail is well marked. The "Hochkeil" is 1.782 m high. You go a uniform slope to the summit. After a short straight line, which you go along to the summit, you reach the summit cross. There are benches to rest and a wonderful view to the "Mitterfeldalm", the "Hochkönig" and the valley.
"Mühleben" Circular Walk
From the Alpendorf village follow the road over "Oberforsthof", "Ötzmooshof" and "Urlpoint". Then the left flat road, which rises slightly to "Mühleben". From there continue on to the mountain trail "Buchau" to Wagrain. Following the route 11 over "Kreistenalm" and "Sternhof" back to the Alpendorf village. Walking time about 4.5 hours.
Starting point Alpendorf village. The road past the "Oberforsthof", then turn left after 400 meters and the roadway along to the "Zederberghof". Walking time about 1 hour.
Panorama circular path
Starting point Alpendorf village. The road upwards past the "Oberforsthof" until the junction to "Weitenmoos". From "Weitenmoos" on turn right and follow the way in the same altitude to the "Alpenhof". Back to the Alpendorf village on the tobogganing track. Walking time about 1.5 hours.
By car to the AGIP petrol station (exit St. Johann direction Salzburg). From "Palfnerdörfl" right of the "Palfnergraben" take the road No. 16 rising slightly over "Guggenbichl" to the "Brandalm". Walking time about 2 hours.
Starting point "Waldschwimmbad" St. Johann in Pongau. Left past the "Waldschwimmbad" rising slightly to the inn "Talblick" (at sign "Hahnbaum Alm"), you can follow the road or turn right and take the footpath over the bridge. Walking time about 2.5 hours.
Driveway with the Alpendorf mountain railway (on foot is possible) to "Obergassalm". Slight increase over "Buchauhütte" to "Gernkogel". From "Gernkogel-Alm" left the road at the same altitude until the rise to "Sonntagskogel". Walking time about 1.5 hours.
Mooslehenalm - Igltalalm
By car just before Großarl (Schied) past inn "Unterviehhaus" to the barriers (Angerwald). From there, the road over "Igltalalm" branching off on the left to "Mooslehenalm". Back over "Holzlehen" to the barriers. Walking time about 2.5 to 3 hours.
